Chapter 35: Plans of the Insane

“I’ve thought about it,” Zundy said, cutting into whatever conversation was going on between the three of them.

Vee’s face was a bit flushed, and Sig looked as though he were ready to attack, the balled-up string clutched in his hand. The Widow still sat where she was, looking smug and self-assured.

Looks like I got up just in time, Zundy thought, noticing the notched candle burning on the nightstand next to The Widow’s bed. It showed him that he’d been thinking for quite a while.

Time didn’t really have much meaning in his inner world, and he could spend hours in there and have it only feel like minutes. He cleared his throat, feeling suddenly embarrassed at having left them to bicker for a full thirty minutes, before addressing Sig.

“You shouldn’t have kept your ‘wanted’ status a secret, as it endangers not only you but the entire group. That said, I stand by what I said when we met. I want to become the Chief of Chiefs and have you along for that journey. You’re a capable fighter and are knowledgeable of the surrounding area.”

“All these clever boys and not one of them wants to join me in my crusade,” The Widow muttered loudly enough that everyone could hear.

“Fine then,” she said. “I didn’t expect the elf to join me, though I did have to give it a try, and you are quite astute in guessing that I have other plans for you.”

Now that Sig knew he was no longer in danger of being ousted from their small crew, he moved farther into the room, standing closer to both Zundy and Vee.

“And what if we don’t want to be a part of whatever you’re planning?” Zundy asked, still staying calm and collected.

Antagonizing a woman like this would not be a wise course of action. He didn’t yet know how dangerous one had to be for the army to add them to their wanted list and issue a Threat Level, but he was pretty sure that none of them would stand a chance of even touching The Widow.

“Nothing,” The Widow said with a shrug.

“Well, then, we’ll just be on our way,” Sig said, already turning to leave.

“But I figured you’d want to at least hear me out. Seeing as I saved your lives and all,” she continued.

Zundy debated leaving for just a few moments. By now,
